About The Book
Flights Of Fantasy - By Damon CalderwoodFor any naturalist or birder, a camera is an essential year round tool and companion. Port Coquitlam photographer Damon Calderwood has taken bird photography to a new level in a just released book, Flights of Fantasy: Photographing North American Birds. The images were taken throughout British Columbia, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

In creating the book, Calderwood had three goals: “First, I wanted to record the life history details of various species during the nesting season as I observed them; second, I wanted to relate my adventures – and sometimes trials and tribulations…and third, perhaps most importantly, I wanted to share the best and most interesting of the many images I was able to produce.”

The result is a collection of bird photographs that are stunning in their intimate detail and quality. Through countless hours of patient observation and with state of the art digital camera technology combined with high speed strobe lights, Calderwood was able to get ‘up close and personal’ with elusive birds in their natural state. In one photograph, Calderwood captures a male golden plover brooding three newly hatched chicks, still incubating an unhatched egg while snapping at a tiny gnat seen suspended between the bills of a snapping beak. In another, a Rufous Hummingbird is caught feeding her full crop of nectar to newborn chicks and again with a miniscule mite hitchhiking on her tiny beak.

Damon Calderwood was born in Vancouver, raised in North Vancouver, and now resides in Port Coquitlam, where he teaches part time in between photography and acting work. Damon’s second book, a collaboration with publisher Don Waite, is titled Moments of Discovery: Photographing North American Birds, and is due out in December of 2008. A children’s bird book entitled Baby Birds is currently in the works.

Flights of Fantasy will appeal to anyone with an interest in nature and birds, but will be of particular interest to fledgling nature photographers as well. The book is available now in local bookstores and retails for $34.95 in hardcover.
